In a week of elite-level insights, HE Football degree students at MITSports were given a unique behind-the-scenes look at the operations of one of Europe’s most storied clubs: Celtic FC.

Bridging the gap between academic theory and real-world industry practice, the sessions welcomed two specialists from the Glasgow-based club to share their expertise in data analytics and community coaching. These lectures provided students with essential “industry currency”, exposing them to the professional standards required at the highest level of the game.

The Science of Scouting: Data-Driven Recruitment

The first session featured Alex Lawrence, a Recruitment Analyst at Celtic FC. Alex provided an in-depth exploration of how elite clubs identify talent in the modern era. Students were shown the sophisticated, data-driven strategies used to scout and evaluate professional players across the globe.

By deconstructing the technical side of recruitment, Alex highlighted how statistical modelling and performance metrics now sit alongside traditional scouting methods to inform multi-million-pound transfer decisions.

Football for All: The Power of Community

The focus then shifted from the technical to the social with Adam Behan, a Celtic FC Community Coach. Adam’s lecture centred on the vital role of inclusive coaching and the methodologies required to ensure football remains accessible to everyone, regardless of background or ability.

His session emphasised that coaching at an elite club isn’t just about the first team; it’s about the specific, impactful programming required to sustain community health, engagement, and social cohesion.

Enhancing Student Employability

These guest lectures are a cornerstone of our commitment to student employability. By interacting directly with active practitioners from a top-tier European club, our students gain a clearer understanding of the varied career pathways available to them—ranging from technical recruitment and data analysis to social coaching initiatives.

Interacting with professionals like Alex and Adam ensures our students are not just learning from textbooks, but are well-prepared for the competitive landscape of the modern football industry.

These sessions provide our students with the networking opportunities and professional standards necessary to transition from the classroom to the pitch, ensuring they graduate with the skills the industry demands today.

Special Thanks

We would like to extend our thanks to Alex Lawrence, Adam Behan, and the staff at Celtic FC for their time and invaluable insights. This collaboration continues to strengthen the link between our academic programmes and the professional game.
